About
Cindy Weisbart is a social documentary photographer and public high school history teacher.
Cindy frames moments of coyuntura, representations of our common humanity and common commitment, in her photographs. The interplay of shape, color, light, shadow, gesture make reference to contexts unseen. She looks to the collaboration, critique and analysis of The Photo League and the Kamoinge Collective for inspiration, and as models of co-created, critical thinking about visual representation.
In the fall of 2019, Cindy was on sabbatical in New York City, volunteering and studying teen photography and social documentary programs, preparing to incorporate student creative work into history classes. During that semester, Cindy worked with teaching artists at ICP, Aperture, the Bronx Documentary Center and St. John's University, and initiated a community youth documentary photo project with a former student in Matapalo, Nicaragua.
Her documentary work has been featured in publications, solo and group shows in the Boston area, New York and Atlanta.
Cindy lives and works around Somerville, Massachusetts. She is a member of Women Photograph and theVisual Literacy Project. Read more about her here.
